Stage 4 – Swiss Alps

Superlative scenery, fascinating experiences plus wonderful accommodation and cuisine all lay in store for the riders on this four-day quest across Switzerland and into France.

St. Moritz has twice played host to the Winter Olympics, and thrice to the Alpine Skiing World Championships. From here the riders strike out for the ascent and push across the spectacular Swiss Alps. Eventually the hard work and panoramic splendour are transformed into relatively, less demanding conditions as the route passes along the southern shores of Lakes Walensee and Zurich.

With the route passing to the north of Basel, the riders will cross the Rhine into Germany as a brief prelude to their arrival in France.

Once in France, the riders will venture through the magnificent nature reserve of Massif du Ventron. The inhabitants of this 1,647-hectare centre of biodiversity include lynx, pine marten, fox, wild cat, owls and peregrine falcons. A wolf was even reported in summer of 2011 – so, a perfect spot for a picnic…

Beyond the Massif du Ventron lies the final destination of Stage 4 – the beautiful city of Épinal, straddling the Moselle Rover.

ARE WE IN DANGER OF SNOW IN THE SWISS ALPS?

We have designed the route so has to avoid the very high peaks. In fact, the highest point of Stage 4 is on Day 1 as we climb out of the start town of St. Mortiz and over the Albulapass at 2,315m. During the entire recce we consulted the local ski stations to get information on snow levels and we were informed that by May this pass will have been open several weeks. Should we experience unseasonal weather conditions there are alternative routes should any pass/route be closed. Thereafter, the elevation drops day by day until we reach the finish in France.
